Common oven problems — like uneven baking, failure to heat, or a burner that won't ignite — usually point to a small set of identifiable causes: a faulty igniter, a failed heating element, a broken temperature sensor, or a malfunctioning control board. Most of these issues are diagnosable and repairable without replacing the entire appliance. Understanding what your oven is telling you can save you time, money, and a lot of burnt dinners.
Oven Won't Heat Up or Takes Forever to Reach Temperature
If your oven isn't reaching the set temperature — or takes dramatically longer than it used to — the most likely culprits differ depending on whether you have a gas or electric oven. In an electric oven, a burned-out bake element is the most common cause; you can often see visible damage like cracks or blistering on the coil. In a gas oven, a weak or failing igniter is usually responsible. The igniter draws electrical current to open the gas valve, and when it weakens, the valve doesn't open fully or consistently. A faulty oven temperature sensor (a thin probe mounted inside the cavity) can also cause this symptom — it may read temperatures incorrectly and cause the oven to cycle off too early. Replacing an igniter or bake element is typically a straightforward repair, often costing less than buying a new appliance.
Oven Runs Too Hot, Burns Food, or Bakes Unevenly
An oven that consistently burns food on the outside while leaving the inside undercooked, or one that scorches items on one side, is pointing to a calibration or component problem — not your recipes. The most frequent cause is a failing oven temperature sensor, which can cause the oven to overshoot its target temperature without knowing it. You can verify this with an independent oven thermometer: if your oven reads 350°F but the thermometer shows 400°F or higher, the sensor or control board is likely at fault. Uneven baking specifically often indicates a problem with the broil element (which cycles on during baking to help even out heat distribution) or a convection fan that has stopped working. A bent or warped oven rack can contribute too, but if food is consistently burning faster than it should at correct temperatures, a technician should inspect the sensor and heating elements.
Oven Light Works But Burners, Broiler, or Controls Don't Respond
When some functions of your oven work but others don't, the problem is often isolated to a specific component rather than a total failure. A broiler element that doesn't heat, for example, is usually a burned-out broil element — separate from the bake element — and is a common and relatively affordable repair. If the oven completely ignores button presses or displays error codes, the electronic control board may be malfunctioning. Control boards are more expensive to replace than individual elements or sensors, so it's worth having a technician properly diagnose the issue first — sometimes what looks like a control board problem is actually a simpler wiring or door latch sensor issue. Gas ovens that click repeatedly but won't ignite may have a moisture issue in the igniter assembly, or a faulty spark module. Never ignore a situation where you smell gas but the oven fails to light — shut off the gas supply and call for service immediately.
